Key Tactics

Your deck is strong in the first couple of turns thanks to Kobold Fighter’s Bloodlust, so make full use of the opportunity. Devote Razafar if you can get an extra kobold out. If they hunt a devoted warmother they’ve just refreshed a card for you. If they devote a soul to hunt Razafar, your bloodlusted fighter can hunt it. Try to anticipate what your opponent will open with and keep enough damage ready to kill it on turn two.

Don’t be afraid to have kobolds die providing you are doing decent damage. If you have a Kobold Fighter, Den Mother, and Token, and they have a Half Giant, attack with two kobolds. Two damage brings the half giant into range of a fire source explosion and one summoner damage is a whole card. An Albino Kobold or Ptekree only makes this trade more favourable.

Source exploding is one of the most important tools in your arsenal. A free board clear followed by a swarm of kobolds or an enraged Matron wins matches. You need five sources for Yvrstrad and some kobolds, or six for Ptekree plus a Matron. So expect to get two or three damage out of your explosion. This is enough to wipe out rival swarm decks that can block a whole horde. Against tall decks you can likely go around the sides of the blockers anyway. If you’re relying on a big hit from a Matron, that’s why you soften up your opponents earlier.

Your best cards: Albinos, Matrons, Ptekree, and Vyrstrad+anyone, cost an odd amount of source so Razafar lets you play them with one less ready source. This is excellent for squeezing an Albino into turn three after a very aggressive opening, or getting that one last point of fire source power out to clear the way for a charged Kobold Matron. Albino Kobolds can protect Razafar with Intervene making a turn two or three Albino a staple of this deck. If you draw one. But be careful against aggressive decks, bring your Albino out a turn later if it trades badly while Intervening.

With five Den and War Mothers you aren’t going to be unlocking a Matron’s good abilities early. But getting three damage for three source (and one more card when they play removal) is still a solid bargain if you spot the opportunity. And if you play From the Ashes or Ptekree a single hit from a Vengeful Matron to the summoner ends matches.

For your sideboard consider the following: Melt for various structures or relics that counter you. Conflagration can stack with a fire source explosion to clear the path for a Matron. Blood Boil to kill the souls Pile On does not, Pile On comboed with with a Fire Source Explosion will kill most things but Blood Boil helps if your opponent rushes out a giant soul, or wipes your board with a Water Titan. For a summoner consider Dredger Wake. This deck really wants an Albino for its aura. Play very aggressively on turn one or two and turn their retaliation into card seek. Worst case is they see it coming and don’t retaliate at all. (With Dredger, draw an extra source on turn one or two and play it when you dredge or after you Source Explode).
